Dan Brodeen of PBC asked if I could help repair the trails that are in the course for there race in mid October called “DoubleDown”. As well as possibly provide some ramps a (pump track) to be specific near the finish area. I agreed and a walk of the course was in order. I grew up making some of the trails here with the local mountain bikers in the late 1980’s and into the 90’s. I and many other off-road cyclists used the trails to train for racing at Norba Nationals and filming videos like “Chain Reaction”, and “Truth And Beauty” to name couple. The trails above and beside Glen Park are gradual with chutes and canyons all formed by the Wisconsin Glacier millions of years ago. Some local history of the land is that The Delaware Water Gap Trolley ran through this area now owned by Monroe County Open Space taking Families and visitors on a scenic view of The Twin Boroughs, Delaware Water Gap, and Portland PA long before the completion of Interstate route 80 which would eventually shut down the Trolley all together. Interpretive information about the Trolley, history of the lines, and the Wisconsin Glacier can be found in both Stroudsburg and Delaware Water Gap Historical Museums.
Back to the Race Course. The Double Down is a personally timed double race down the course (downhill) from top to bottom finishing at the Play field in Glen Park. The race starts at about 600 feet. There are Beginner to Expert level entries as well as some fun to be had down at the play field for spectators. The course takes you through rock gardens, over large limestones, into gullies, chutes, chicanes, man-made berms and old Trolley Trails.
After all the racers do there two timed runs, the times are doubled and winners are standing on podiums receiving prizes from sponsors for there best single times and overall times. The Play field then turns into a game of HORSE for all ages and its a lot of fun to watch.
The Portable Pumptrack was being used by everyone from little children to older adults, raising more awareness that soon there will be a Bike park in the area. Rivers Edge Bike Park in Smithfield Township.
